Bromsgrove MP Sajid Javid is to take on the job of Home Secretary in news announced today. The news makes Sajid, former Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Business, Innovation and Skills and the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, the first BAME holder of one of the great offices of state (Prime Minister, Chancellor, Foreign Secretary, Home Secretary).
Local councillors and residents welcomed the news, with Catshill councillor Helen Jones saying "I'm really chuffed for him. He's always got our back in Catshill."
Margaret Sherrey, councillor for Clent, added: "He's proved himself, he's always worked hard for us, he's got a fantastic memory and is not fazed by problems. He's always proved he's capable of the job he's been given - in Bromsgrove and nationally."
Simon Nock, chairman of the local party, said: "I have to say, he's done a fantastic job for us in Bromsgrove. The country is in safe hands."
A resident contacted the local party to say: “I wish him well, Bromsgrove has indeed been fortunate to have such a strong personality looking after our interests.”
In his first statement, Sajid said:
"First to say it is a huge privilege to be asked by the Prime Minister to become the next Home Secretary. My first priority is to make sure the Home Office always does all it can to keep British people safe. It is a huge privilege and something I take very seriously. The most urgent task I have is to help those British citizens who came from the Caribbean, the Windrush generation, and make sure they are all treated with the decency and fairness they deserve."
