Following the reception, Sajid met up with them both to talk about the importance of continued research into the condition.
Commenting, Sajid Javid said:
“I was very impressed by Rebekah’s determination and positivity – she’s an absolute champion.
I’m pleased that Government is similarly determined to tackle diabetes so that diagnosis is faster and treatment outcomes are improved for people like Rebekah.
Diabetes affects many people in Bromsgrove, so it was a helpful to discuss Rebekah’s thoughts on it, particularly for young people”.
The Government has prioritised diabetes as part of its 2016/17 mandate to NHS England. It is developing plans to improve the outcomes of people with and at risk of diabetes which will focus equally on Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. To help people avoid developing Type 2 diabetes, the Government is rolling out a national diabetes prevention programme, the first of its kind in the world.
NHS England has also been working on developing improvements for the transition from children and young people diabetes services to adult services, which will benefit those with Type 1 diabetes.
